Purpose

The Vereeniging Familie Salm (Salm Family Association) was officially founded in 1912 by our ancestors of the 8th, 9th, and 10th generation who also drew up the statutes and regulations. Article 3 of the statutes describes the purpose of the association as follows:

The Salm Family Association aims to:

a) through the union of its members, to improve the interests of the family in general and those of its members in particular, and to within our power preserve the honour of the family;

b) to create a family archive and maintain the family tree; and

c) to maintain the graves of the family members that fall under article 7, as well as monuments built in their honour.

The founding of this association was based on the work of our founders Abraham Salm Jacz. (1793-1858), Gerlof Bartholomeus Salm (1831-1897), and Cecilia Coenradina Salm (1863-1905). Today’s family association was established thanks to their work.

Origin of the name Salm

The name “Salm" most likely came from the occupation of the father of our forefather, Claes Claesz., Zalmkoper (translation: Salmon Buyer). On the death announcement Sallem-Kooper (spelled phonetically) was given as his occupation. On the announcement of our forefather himself, Claes Sybrantsz (1609-1664) the name Sallem was placed directly after the name, perhaps as a nickname. Once it was used in this manner, it was accepted and used for all the offspring of Claes Sybrantsz, with the proper spelling of the day: Salm.

His eldest son, Claes Claesz Salm (1635-1699) had 13 children of whom five died in infancy. One of his children, Abraham Claesz Salm (1662-1703) married Marritie Dircx. All the branches of the present day generation (the 12th, 13th and 14th generations) stem from this couple.
